Bavis Creek - TA2406

Bavis Creek enters the San Juan river from the south and contains the only large section of high productivity old-growth south of the San Juan river and North of the San Juan Ridge, it extends from the top of the ridge down a steep slope towards the San Juan river, just miles away from the biggest Douglas fir tree on earth. Timber Sale license TA2406 would clear cut the heart of this forest if BC Timber Sales chooses to move it to auction.

Saw Link Timber Sale (WA DNR)

These are images of DNR's "ecological forestry." This timber sale, located near Lake Cushman in Mason County is, according to DNR not a clear-cut but rather a "variable retention harvest." Judge for yourself.

Crows Feet Timber Sale (WA DNR)

Unit one of the Crows Feet timber sale (scheduled for 2028,) targets one of the best remaining sections of legacy forest on Dow Mountain near Lake Cushman in Mason County. There are trees in the forest over 5 feet in diameter and it is on its way to becoming a old-growth Douglas Fir ecosystem.

Salt And Pepper Timber Sale (WADNR)

The Salt And Pepper Timber Sale in Clallam County was originally scheduled for auction in April 2023 but has been delayed, this timber sale is home to massive trees up to 58 inches in diameter and appears to have never been logged before, it is home to Salal over 5 feet tall and is an impressive example of a later successional forest.

Auger In Timber Sale (WA DNR)

The "Auger In" timber sale is located in the headwaters of the Chehalis River and is scheduled for auction in March 2025. Unit 2 of this timber sale contains hundreds of old growth hemlock trees and is for all intents and purposes an old growth forest, in a region that has almost none. This sale is likely Marbled Murrelet habitat. DNR is required to do an old growth assessment of this forest before auctioning it, and if we are lucky unit two will be dropped from the timber sale. That being said, this timber sale is located in the Pacific Cascade region of the DNR which regularly logs small sections of old growth and may log a big section like this one given that it was selectively logged in the past.

"Shift The Paradigm" Timber Sale (WADNR)

The "Shift The Paradigm" timber sale which is scheduled for auction in November 2024 targets some of the best remaining legacy forests in the Willapa River watershed, this watershed has just 0.2% of its original old growth forest remaining, and only 2.1% of the watershed contains legacy forests. The forest contained within unit one of his timber sale contains a dominant cohort of trees that are over 200 feet tall. This forest is easily one of the best and only opportunities to regain old growth forest across any part of this watershed. It is a top conservation priority.

Gain Creek #LCN37 & Logging

Gain Creek on Pacheedaht Territory is home to some of the worst government approved clear-cut logging on Vancouver Island. The old growth forests of Gain creek are being targeted for ~corporate gain~ by Pacheedaht Andersen Timber Holdings. This watershed is unseeded territory and public land, part of TFL 61 near the Jordan River. For the past several years logging has pushed up into the Gain Creek watershed which flows off of the San Juan Ridge. The company has clear cut through the creek in multiple places and newly approved cut blocks would clear cut through waterfalls to target some of the last old-growth forests of the area.

Gordon 4000 #LP06

Cut Block #LP06 is located in the tenure of the Qala:yit partnership, which supplies logs to the Pacheedaht Mill Port Renfrew. This cut block contains massive yellow cedar trees that are likely over 1000 years old, it is also home to a population of Oldgrowth Specklebelly Lichen. As of March 2024 logging contractors have constructed a road into the forest and clearcutting seems eminent.

Suzie Q Timber Sale (WADNR)

The Suzie Q Timber Sale which is scheduled for auction in the beginning of 2025 contains an intact 10+/- acre stand of old growth, one of the only stands of old growth remaining in South Western Washington. This timber sale is located in Grays Harbor County and revenue generated from it would go towards Evergreen State college among other beneficiaries.

Maladjusted Timber Sale (WADNR)

The Maladjusted Timber Sale in Jefferson County contains a perplexing mix of massive legacy trees, sections of legacy forest as well as sections of forest appearing to be plantations that date back to the 1930s, it is certainly a prime candidate for conservation and restoration and it's much more diverse than most forests. This forest used to be part of the "Anderson Adjusted" timber sale, part of that timber sale was canceled but this unit has been re-branded and is now scheduled for auction in the end of 2024.

Cleveland Peninsula - Sealaska Logging

These are images of the Cleveland Peninsula which was logged by the Sealaska Native Corporation in the 2010s. This clear-cut stretches for over 5000 acres, through valleys and over mountains. The State of Alaska has some of the worst environmental standards on earth and land privatization is now the biggest threat to the Tongass Rainforest. I captured these images while filming for Eden's Last Chance in summer 2019.
